Copper grounding stolen from Basin Electric’s Wheelock Substation
On March 26 2015, Basin Electric Transmission System Maintenance (TSM) discovered signs of theft at a cooperative substation. At an unknown date, copper and communication grounds were stolen from the Wheelock Substation, a low-asset facility near Ray, ND.
Intruders entered the property by cutting holes in the perimeter fence, cut copper groundings attached to the substation gate and communication grounds near the control house.
Copper sales are lucrative, said Gene Giesen, Basin Electric security and response services physical security and compliance supervisor. Giesen said thefts like these are rare in Basin Electric’s service territory.
There has only been one other copper theft in the last 10 years, but the crime is more common in the southern states. When groundings are stolen, substation safety is left at risk of lightning strike damage.
