Pretoria Substation Caught Fire Following Two Attempted Copper Thefts
A substation in the east of Pretoria caught fire on Saturday morning after there were two separate copper theft attempts to steal cables from the substation.
Residents in La Montagne reported smoke from the substation in Albertus Street.
Ward councillor Ben Chapman said the fire was allegedly a result of a short-circuiting caused when the thieves tampered with the cables. Emergency services were quickly on scene to control the situation.
The first copper theft attempt was on Friday night, around 23:15. A security guard on the premises raised the alarm and the thief was caught after he had broken into the substation. Two hours later there was another attempt to steal cables at the same station. Again the Silverton police responded swiftly to the scene to catch the second thief.
