Paris police responded to a theft call at 8:48 A.M. on June 14, 2017, in the 1200 block of W Sherman St. It was reported that someone had cut a hole in the fence surrounding the power transfer station and had stolen several copper grounding cables.

Metro Police said a convicted copper thief was critically injured Tuesday morning after he’s accused of attempting copper theft from a Nashville Electric Service substation at Dunn Avenue.

An eyewitness told Fox 17 News he saw the man on top of one of the transformers before the man caught fire and started screaming. The witness called 911 and the man was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center and is critical but stable condition.

A $5,000 reward is offered by NYSEG for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for a rash of recent substation copper theft.

“As well as putting themselves in grave danger, the perpetrators are endangering our workers and the public,” said Mark S. Lynch, president and CEO of NYSEG and RG&E, in a news release. “We are working with law enforcement to apprehend those responsible and offer a reward to encourage the public to assist us.”
